Following the Eaton Fire of January 2025, Altadena Cooks was created with the goal of documenting tangible, sensory histories from the area by asking neighbors what they eat. While it is impossible to capture all that gives a town spirit, makes a house a home, and shapes one’s identity, food undeniably plays a part. Because food is in the fabric of our daily life — spanning the routine to the celebratory and everything in between — this project aims to use it as a lens for capturing people, community, time, and place. This project won’t rebuild kitchens, but it hopes to preserve some of the flavors of home.

“… of Altadena specific food memories I have … one sticks out. My neighbor was from Louisiana originally … Every New Years they would make a giant pot of seafood gumbo and the whole neighborhood would show up … there are some great recipes like that from people in that community that really for me highlight the beauty of living [in] and being from Altadena.”
